Czech Wikipedia offers 200,000 articles

Prague, July 7 (CTK) - The number of articles on the Czech version of Wikipedia reached 200,000 on Wednesday, July 6, Wikimedia Czech Republic association chairman Michal Reiter told reporters Thursday.

The jubilee article was on the NHL's goalkeeper Ron Hextall.

"We have finally become the largest Czech encyclopedia," Reiter said.

Wikipedia's Czech version has clearly overcome the so far largest Czech encyclopaedia, the Otto encyclopaedic dictionary. including over 10,000 entries.

The Czech Wikipedia has become the 18th language version with over 200,000 entries.

Wikipedia exists in a total of 250 language versions.The largest one, the English Wikipedia, offers over 3.6 million articles.

All language versions together comprise over 19 million articles. Some 8000 new articles are added every day.

In the past three months about 100 new articles appeared on Czech Wikipedia a day.

At present 679 active editors work on Czech Wikipedia making at least five modifications a month.

The Alexa server has assessed Wikipedia as the world's seventh most visited website, while over a half of visitors seek its English version (five million visits a day on average).

Czech Wikipedia registers some 105,000 visits a day.

Wikipedia was established in the United States in 2001.Its users are writing and editing articles themselves free of charge. The Czech version was created in 2002.
