Liberec Technical University opens new research centre

Liberec, North Bohemia, Oct 10 (CTK) - The Technical University of Liberec Wednesday opened a new building for the Institute for Nanomaterials, Advanced Technology and Innovation (CxI), costing 655 million crowns and constructed thanks to subsidies from the European Union and the Czech Republic.

Rector Zdenek Kus said the new research centre has been the largest investment in the 60-year history of the university.

The Institute for Nanomaterials, Advanced Technology and Innovation opened in 2009. At present, 176 people are working on 43 research projects. The centre has applied for subsidies for further 50 new projects, research director Miroslav Cernik said.

The centre has been focusing on advanced technologies that would be applied in car industry and on nanofibers and their application in medicine, environment protection and textile industry.

The Technical University of Liberec has about 10,000 students, 5 percent of whom are foreigners.

The construction of another research, development and study centre has recently begun at the university. The building is to cost 290 million crowns and open in April 2014.
