Klaus: Election results clear

15 October 2012

Prague, Oct 14 (CTK) - The election result is clear and comprehensible, Czech President Vaclav Klaus said yesterday about the regional and Senate elections in which the left scored a distinct success and added that he believes everyone has drawn due conclusions from it.

"The President considers the election result to be so clear, unequivocal and comprehensible that it does not require any complex interpretation. The President is convinced that everyone has comprehended the result and that everyone has drawn due conclusions from it for themselves," Klaus's spokesman Radim Ochvat said.

The opposition Social Democrats (CSSD) won the Friday-Saturday elections in nine out of 13 regions, the Communists (KSCM) in two regions, and the senior ruling Civic Democrats (ODS) and the Mayors for the Liberec Region movement each in one region.

The CSSD also won the first round of the elections to one third of the Senate. The second round will be held in a week.

The CSSD and KSCM together have a chance of gaining a constitutional (three-fifth) majority in the 81-seat upper house of parliament.

Prime Minister Petr Necas, ODS chairman, said he is responsible primarily for the general election.

He said the bad result of the regional and Senate elections for the right is due to the unpopular, but needed reforms his government has been carrying out.

The CSSD, for its part, is calling for the government to resign over the loss in regions.
