MfD: Students against Communist control over schools

22 November 2012

Olomouc, North Moravia, Nov 21 (CTK) - A protest against the fact that a Communist (KSCM) politician will be in charge of educational affairs started in another Czech region, at the Palacky University in Olomouc, daily Mlada fronta Dnes (MfD) writes in its regional supplement Wednesday.

Professor Jaroslav Miller, head of the history department at the Philosophical Faculty, who initiated the protest said it is schizophrenic to tell children at school about the country's totalitarian past and the 1948 communist coup, and to put a deputy regional governor nominated by the unreformed Communist Party in charge of the educational affairs.

The authors of the protest are collecting signatures under a petition that will be handed to Olomouc Regional Governor Jiri Rozboril (Social Democrats, CSSD).

Rozboril does not reckon with replacing the KSCM's candidate Zdenek Svec in the post of deputy governor in charge of education.

Svec, an unaffiliated politician running for the KSCM, told the paper he would not promote any ideological views in education.

Svec said the regional office first of all redistributes money to the schools operated by the region.

This has been the first time that the Communist Party will take part in the rule of Czech regions. The KSCM has been the second most successful party in the regional elections held in October and won by the CSSD. The Communists even have one governor, Oldrich Bubenicek, who heads the Usti region in northern Bohemia.

People staged protests against KSCM regional councillors being put in charge of educational affairs in other regions, too. In South Bohemia, students organised a one-week protest against this. South Bohemia University rector Libor Grubhoffer said then the Communist Party was a criminal organisation.

On Monday, students protesting against KSCM's influence on educational affairs attended the constitutional meeting of the Hradec Kralove regional council, MfD wrote.
