Prague, Dec 10 (CTK) - A record high number of over five million people have visited state castles, chateaux and other heritage sights in 2015, Jana Ticha, spokeswoman for the National Heritage Institute (NPU) that administers about 100 state sights said yesterday.
The number of visitors has considerably increased since 2009 when the NPU launched a new system of their register.
As of November 30, 4,994,944 people visited state sights.
"Their number has definitely exceeded five million by now since the data are from late November and people are still visiting the sights that remain open. The exact figures for 2015 will be available around January 10," Ticha added.
Last year, 4,8 million visitors to state sights were registered in the Czech Republic with a population of 10.5 million, which was also a record high figure exceeding that of 2013 by 575,000.
The NPU said the rising attendance was caused by accompanying programmes. However, even traditional guided tours of castles and chateaux are still popular and their attendance has not dropped.
The high number of tourists have brought 30 million crowns to the NPU´s budget this year. It will spend the money on repairs of some sights.
In October, the Lednice chateau, which is part of the UNESCO- listed Lednice-Valtice complex of chateaux and parks in south Moravia, was the most popular sight, but in November it was beaten by the UNESCO-listed Cesky Krumlov, south Bohemia.
However, both sights have taken turns in leading the popularity standings for long. The third most popular sight is usually Hluboka chateau, south Bohemia, followed by Karlstejn castle, central Bohemia, and the complex of the UNESCO-listed chateau and gardens in Kromeriz, south Moravia.
Though the main tourist season has ended, 13 state sights will remain open in winter, too, including the chateaux Lednice, Hluboka, Sychrov, north Bohemia, Hradec nad Moravici, north Moravia, and Mnisek pod Brdy, central Bohemia, and the castles Karlstejn, Rozmberk and Nove Hrady, both south Bohemia, Valec, west Bohemia, and Krivoklat, central Bohemia.
Other state castles an chateaux will offer Advent, Christmas and New Year´s events as well as individual tours per order.
