Governor rejects calls for region not to cover Zeman's visit

Olomouc Region Governor Ladislav Oklestek has rejected the call by Marian Jurecka, the agriculture minister and member of the regional assembly, that the region should not pay the costs of President Milos Zeman's upcoming visit, he told journalists on Friday.

Czech presidential candidate Drahoš ends petition campaign

Czech presidential candidate Jiri Drahos, former head of the Czech Academy of Sciences, ended the petition campaign in support of his candidacy last week. He said that he gathered over 110,000 signatures from people, or far more than the required 50,000.

Social spending to rise by 32 billion crowns next year

The Czech state's social and welfare spending, including on pro-employment policy, is projected at 649 billion crowns in 2018, a 32-billion rise compared to the social spending this year, it ensues from the 2018 budget bill the government has submitted to parliament.

Zeman among V4 presidents backing West Balkans EU integration

The Visegrad Group's (V4) four presidents supported the EU accession by the West Balkans at a summit on Saturday, with Czech President Milos Zeman backing the position but mentioning Kosovo, still unrecognised by some EU members, as a question mark in the West Balkans question.

Poll: Young Czechs interested in politics, mistrust politicians

Some 75 percent of young Czechs mistrust politicians, who, they believe, are doing nothing for them, but at the same time, about 80 percent of them are interested in politics and support democracy, a survey of youth groups in the Visegrad Four (V4) states showed, Sona Polak has told CTK.

Design of Prague Jewish transports memorial to go on display

The design of a memorial to mark the wartime Jewish transports from Prague's former Bubny railway station will be put on display in the nearby Chemistry Gallery in Prague-Holesovice on October 16-17, Pavel Stingl has told CTK on behalf of the Shoah Memorial group, the project's organiser.
