Poll: About half of Czechs are satisfied with President Zeman

A majority of Czechs share the view that President Milos Zeman is the president of all citizens (52%), but only a minority believes he creates a good image of the country abroad (42%), according to a poll whose results the public Czech Television (ČT) released yesterday.

Number of Czech abortions goes down for years

The number of abortions has been steadily decreasing in the Czech Republic and it was about 20,000 last year, while in 1990 their number was more than five times higher, according to data of the Czech Statistical Office.

Procession though Prague's Jewish Quarter marks Yom HaShoah

A procession of about 300 people carrying Israeli flags walked through the old Jewish quarter of the city and then gathered in the Wallenstein Garden, which is part of the Senate, to mark Yom HaShoah, the Holocaust Day, yesterday.

Czech PM hails Macron's win in first French fight for president

The expected victory of centrist candidate Emmanuel Macron in the first round of the French presidential election today would be good news for France, the Czech Republic and Europe, Prime Minister Bohuslav Sobotka (Social Democrats, ČSSD) said on Twitter last night.

Právo: Czech firms employ convicts to fill workforce gap

Czech firms have been increasingly choosing employees from among prison inmates in a situation where the country suffers from a shortage of workforce, daily Právo wrote on Thursday, adding that the trend benefits both the firms and the prisoners involved.

Senate approves free trade deal with Canada

The Senate, the upper house of Czech parliament, approved the Comprehensive Economic and Trade Agreement (CETA) that removes most duties and fees between the EU and Canada as of 2018 at its session on Wednesday night. In March, the Senate approved the associated strategic partnership agreement between the EU and Canada that defines a joint struggle against terrorism, money laundering and proliferation of the arms of mass destruction.

Senate rejects Zeman's candidate for ÚSTR board member

MfD: Czechs need more out-patient psychiatrists

Museum marks 70 years from Czech globetrotter tandem's first trip

The National Technical Museum (NTM) in Prague will mark the 70th anniversary of the start of the first journey of the famous Czech globetrotter tandem Jiri Hanzelka and Miroslav Zikmund at a commemorative event on Saturday, NTM director Karel Ksandr told reporters on Thursday.
