Agrofert dismisses suspicion of tax optimisation

The Czech Agrofert board dismissed on Thursday the suspicion that the holding committed tax optimisation in the past and defended the purchases of firms from its former owner Andrej Babis (ANO), saying they were logical from the business point of view.

Court: Police steps during Chinese president's visit legal

Neither the police nor the City Hall violated law by not having let demonstrators enter a square outside Prague Castle during the visit by Chinese President Xi Jinping last March, the Prague Municipal Court ruled on Thursday in reaction to a former minister's complaint.

Czech town to host world's largest poker tournament

The poker casino in Rozvadov will host the largest poker tournament outside Las Vegas this autumn, daily Hospodářské noviny reported on Thursday, adding that organisers expect more than 20,000 guests to arrive.

Czechs help tackle AIDS in Central African Republic

The Czech SIRIRI non-government organisation will spend over four million crowns in aid of the people who are tackling AIDS in the Central African Republic, SIRIRI spokeswoman Terezie Imlaufova told CTK on Thursday, adding that the project has been subsidised by the Foreign Ministry.

Real estate firm owner Morcinek to head ANO's election campaign

Petr Morcinek, who owns the M&M Reality estate firm, will be the chief manager of the Czech government ANO movement's campaign ahead of the October general election, ANO spokesman Vladimir Vorechovsky told CTK on Thursday, adding that the ANO board has approved Morcinek's nomination.

Czech NGO establishes branch in Iraq to help people in Mosul

Poll: Every third Czech homosexual hide their orientation at work

One third of gays and lesbians hide their sexual orientation at work, one fifth have experienced unfair approach to them and one third are afraid that their orientation will negatively affect their career, according to a survey the Business for Society (BPS) group presented on Thursday.

Senators want court to abolish smoking ban in restaurants

Czech senators have proposed the Constitutional Court to abolish the "anti-smoking" law's provisions such as the smoking ban in restaurants and the sale of alcohol in vending machines, Jaroslav Kubera and Ivo Valenta told ČTK on behalf of the proposal's 20 signatories on Thursday.

Two Czechs detained in Rhodes on suspicion of drug deals

Czech investor buys envelope with two Red Mauritius

An anonymous Czech collector has bought an envelope with two Red Mauritius stamps for 2.4 million euros, which, together with a Red and a Blue Mauritius in his possession, form a set that is more valuable than the Mauritius set in the British Royal Collection, iHNed.cz reported. The Czech acquired the envelope with two Red Mauritius, called Bombay Cover, in a Swiss auction at the end of 2016. "It was an advantageous purchase," court expert told iHNed.cz.
