Gov't approves creation of new industrial zone in northern Moravia

The government on Wednesday approved the establishment of an industrial zone in Karviné which would attract investors and create up to 2,000 new jobs in a region with traditionally high unemployment.

Gripens bound for Iceland return to home base due to technical problem

Five Czech Gripen fighter jets which left for Iceland on Wednesday morning were forced to return to home base shortly after due to a technical defect on one of the planes, the head of the Časlav airbase reported.

Opening of refugee centre in west Bohemia to cost 50 million

The opening of a refugee detention centre in Balkova, west Bohemia, will cost between CZK 40 million and CZK 50 million, Deputy Interior Minister Jiří Nováček said yesterday, adding that the reconstruction of the centre for 210 refugees will last until mid-2016.

Czech Railways to pay advance compensation to victims' families

The relatives of the two people killed in a collision of a Czech high-speed train and a lorry that yesterday occurred near Studénka, north Moravia, will receive a minimum advance payment of EUR 21,000 from the České dráhy (ČD) railway operator.

ČR to send further ammunition to Iraq for fighting IS

The Czech Republic will give Iraq the rest of the ammunition that it donated to Baghdad for fighting Islamic State in 2014, Foreign Minister Lubomír Zaorálek has written on Twitter, referring to the cabinet's decision at its meeting in Ostrava yesterday.

Czechs to buy equipment for Gripen planes' ground target attacks

The Czech Gripen fighter jets will receive additional new equipment enabling them to attack ground targets, within the planned public procurement worth CZK 427 millions, which the government discussed yesterday, the Government Office has written on its website.

Two killed as high-speed train collides with truck

Two people were killed and 13 injured when a high-speed Pendelino train collided with a truck at a level crossing at Studénka in the Moravia-Silesia Region on Wednesday morning. Three of the injured are reported to be in critical condition. The train, travelling from Bohumín to Františkovy Lázně, was going at over 100 kilometres an hour when the accident occurred.

Právo: Students mind gays in class more than lesbians

Secondary-school students tolerate lesbians in their class much more than gays, they have said in a questionnaire that more than 1000 of them have been filling for two years within "rainbow seminars," daily Právo reported yesterday.
