The Czech-German music festival Mitte Europa will offer 47 concerts, mainly of Baroque music, in Saxony, Bavaria and the Karlovy Vary and Ústí regions in the next seven weeks.

LN: Former Czech European commissioner Fuele wants to head OSCE

Stefan Fuele, EU Commissioner for Enlargement and European Neighbourhood Policy in 2010-14, has offered himself as a European security commissioner to Czech Foreign Minister Lubomír Zaorálek, with the post of OSCE head being his goal, daily Lidové noviny (LN) reported yesterday.

All Visegrad Four (V4) countries, or the Czech Republic, Hungary, Poland and Slovakia, are opposed to the EC-proposed quotas for spreading refugees among EU states, their representatives have agreed in Brussels yesterday, Czech Prime Minister Bohuslav Sobotka said.

European NGOs warn against weak nature protection in Prague

European NGOs are afraid that nature protection may decline as a result of the EC's plan to check the effect of two EU directives which protect birds and wildlife habitats, respectively, representatives of about 100 NGOs said in Prague yesterday, adding they that want the directives to remain unchanged.

Smoking still allowed in 40% of pubs in Prague, Brno

Smoking is still allowed in about 40% of restaurants, bars and cafes in Prague and Brno, the two Czech largest cities, according to a survey the Internet pub guide Zomato has released in the wake of the government's approval of a bill that is to completely ban smoking in pubs.

EC approves all Czech operational programmes

Protests against lifting of coal mining limits in the north

Protests against the lifting of brown coal mining limits in North Bohemia are scheduled to take place at two dozen locations around the country on Thursday. The campaign was organised by the Limity jsme my (We Are the Limits) initiative and supported by the extra-parliamentary Green Party. The limits were set by the government in 1991 and they guaranteed to towns and villages on whose territories are brown coal deposits that they would not be pulled down because of mining.
