Brno's Trauma Hospital to join the City Gallery of murals

The City Gallery project aims to create over 20 murals on various facades around Cejl, to bring new life to the "Brno Bronx". František Skála's painting, "The Fateful Look Back" was approved by city councillors on Wednesday to adorn the wall of the Trauma Hospital.

More students to return to school next week as Czech Republic enters PES level 4

On Monday, the Czech Republic will move to the fourth level of the PES system, according to the Minister of Health Jan Blatný. November 25th and 30th will see students of certain levels returning to classes, as announced by the Minister of Education, Robert Plaga.

Ban of cage-farming of chickens approved by Czech Senate

The Czech Republic follows neighbouring Austria and Germany in a move towards more humane conditions for the farming of chickens. An amendment to the animal welfare law has been approved by the Czech Senate. The new law will ban the cage-farming of chickens from 2027. Agriculture Minister Miroslav Toman had argued that such a ban should first be passed by the EU.

Covid-19 regulations highlight inequality between marriage and registered partnerships

New anti-Covid 19 regulations have shed light on the unequal footing of civil partnerships for LGBTQ+ couples in CZ, compared to marriage. The new measures allow weddings to continue even under the state of emergency, while registered partnership ceremonies are only permitted "if urgent", such as in the case of the imminent death of one of the partners.

New limits to number of people allowed in shops from Wednesday

A new limit on the number of customers allowed in stores will apply from Wednesday, with no more than one person allowed per 15 square meters. However, shops will now stay open longer, until 9pm. The government has also approved another 30-day extension of the state of emergency, until December 20, which needs to be approved by the Parliament this week.

New date set for BRNO16 International Short Film Festival

Originally planned for October, the 61st edition of the BRNO16 festival will now take place online a few weeks from now. Previously purchased accreditations remain valid, and tickets are still available for the online event, to be held on December 2nd-6th.

Sharp decline in employment in Europe since end of 2019

Recent statistics from Eurostat have shown a sharp drop in the employment rate in European countries in the second quarter of 2020. Young people (aged 15-24) saw the most dramatic change since the end of 2019, with Slovenia and Ireland as the most affected countries.

Keeping memories safe – Brno prison's walls will be digitally documented

The Old City Prison on Cejl bore witness to many of the most turbulent moments in Brno's history. Post Bellum, a non-profit organisation, will preserve the unique cultural heritage of the former prison by digitally preserving the original inscriptions on the walls of its cells.

Restaurants call for support in face of losses

The decrease in revenues from public catering facilities from January to August 2020 amounted to CZK 40 billion, approximately 36%, even though this period included the holiday season, when there was increased custom from domestic tourists in some areas.
