Govt approves reinforcement of Czech contingent in Afghanistan

The government yesterday approved the reinforcement of the Czech contingent serving in Afghanistan by up to 55 troops, Defense Minister Martin Barták said. Fifteen new soldiers will help train the Afghan police and some 40 soldiers with two Arthur artillery hunting radars are to protect the Polish base in the Ghazni province.

Forty MPs want Nobel prize to go to Chinese activist

Forty members of the Czech parliament and former president Václav Havel have supported the nomination of Liu Xiaobo, founder of the Chinese Charter 08 human rights call, for this year's Nobel Peace Prize, Igor Blazevic, one of the organisers of the nomination, announced Friday.

Irish court okays Czech criminals' extradition

An Irish court in Dublin has agreed with the extradition of Tomáš Půta and Maroš Šulej, Berdych gang members, for possible prosecution in the Czech Republic in several cases including a "robbery of the century," Půta's lawyer Jaroslav Ortman said Friday.
