Czech research and development (R&D) was one of the first sectors to fall victim to public budgetary cuts, together with health care and social security. Moreover, a transfer of funds to support more applied research provoked an outcry from Czech academia, even though the country claims it wants to limit its dependence on manufacturing and industry, and instead progressively become a knowledge economy.
