Prague, Jan 2 (CTK) – The National Gallery in Prague has recently started presenting its collections online and high resolution images of the first 300 works of art have been freely available on its website since Christmas.

The operation of the online gallery will be assessed this month and its English version will be added soon.

The gallery plans to gradually release online its complete collections, or nearly 400,000 works, in the long term, its spokeswoman Tereza Jezkova said.

Details that cannot be seen by the naked eye should be visible in the high resolution images.

However, only high resolution images of works that were made more than 70 years ago can be available to the public for free under the copyright law. In case of more modern art, the gallery has to negotiate with the heirs and copyright owners. Low resolution images of these works are likely to be released on the gallery’s website.

The gallery’s director Jiri Fajt said the digitisation project could be launched thanks to an increase in the gallery’s annual budget from 250 to 300 million crowns, approved in December. Eight million crowns will be used for the online gallery and educational programmes, he said.
