Karlovy Vary, West Bohemia, June 14 (CTK) – An opening concert Sunday started the Czech-German music festival Mitte Europa that will offer 47 concerts, mainly of Baroque music, in Saxony, Bavaria and the Karlovy Vary and Usti regions in the next seven weeks, organiser Blanka Navratova has told CTK.

After 24 years, the artistic management of the festival Mitte Europa (Centre of Europe) is changing. Its founders, Ivana and Thomas Thomaschkes, will be replaced with Manfred Schmidt, Navratova said.

“In all, the festival will offer 51 events in 47 places,” Navratova said.

“It will be newly held in Rehau and Muenchenreuth in Germany and in the National House in Karlovy Vary,” she added.

The opening concert was performed by Bachorchester Leipzig.

Karlovy Vary (Carlsbad) hosted the opening of the festival for the first time.

“Baroque music is the central motive of the festival and we want to retain this,” Schmidt said.

“However, we would also like to add more jazz and folk music, depending on the interest in the individual regions,” he added.
