Prague, Nov 15 (CTK) – This year’s season at the state-owned castles and chateaux managed by the National Heritage Institute (NPU), which ended on October 31, has been the most successful since the Czech Republic was established in 1993, NPU director Nadezda Goryczkova said yesterday.
She said the heritage sights attracted 5.4 million people and the yields reached almost 500 million crowns, which is a 10 percent increase compared with the same period last year.
Some castles and chateaux will be also open to visitors on special occasions during the Advent and Christmas.
Ticket sales generated about 420 million crowns, which is more than for the whole of last year.
The NPU also gains money from lease to film-makers and for weddings.
Goryczkova said people get married not only in the romantic setting of castles and chateaux, but also in the discontinued and reconstructed Michal Mine in Ostrava, north Moravia, for instance.
According to the Culture Ministry’s annual report, the NPU had a budget of 1.45 billion crowns last year.
The biggest annual increase in the number of visitors was registered by Valtice, south Moravia, which was seen by 125,000 people compared to 48,000 in the same period last year.
The UNESCO-listed Cesky Krumlov, south Bohemia, and Lednice, south Moravia, traditionally lead the rankings. Both of them were visited by more than 400,000 people, compared with 395,416 and 385,303 people, respectively, last year.
Other favourite sights are Hluboka chateau, Karlstejn castle, the UNESCO-listed Kromeriz and others.
According to the NPU management, many people now prefer domestic heritage sights to trips abroad. In addition, curators prepare interesting accompanying programmes and the sights are renovated.
