Prague, March 1 (CTK) – President Milos Zeman continues to be trusted by 59 percent of Czechs, like in the past two months, while the confidence in the government dropped by four percent in the past month, to 40 percent in mid-February, an opinion poll released by the CVVM agency has shown.

Out of all constitutional institutions, people traditionally trust town mayors and assemblies most. The February poll confirmed this.

Mayors and town assemblies enjoy the confidence of 64 and 62 percent of the respondents, respectively, the poll showed.

The popularity of the regional assemblies stood at 42 percent, and that of the regional governors at 39 percent in mid-February.

As usual, the position of the two houses of parliament is the worst in this respect.

People’s confidence in the Senate, the upper house, dropped to 30 percent, 3 percent down compared with January, and their confidence in the Chamber of Deputies dropped by 5 percent to 28 percent.

Zeman, who was Social Democrat (CSSD) prime minister in 1998-2002, is more often trusted by elderly people, pensioners, inhabitants of Moravia, left-wingers and those who are satisfied with both the political situation and their lives.

The centre-left government is mainly trusted by people with good living standards, those satisfied with the political situation and their lives, inhabitants of Moravia and supporters of the government parties (CSSD, ANO and the Christian Democrats, KDU-CSL).

Seventeen percent of Czechs are satisfied with the current political situation, which is a 6 percent decline against January.

Forty-five percent are dissatisfied, and about one third of respondents said they are neither satisfied nor dissatisfied.

“A detailed analysis has shown that people’s satisfaction with the political situation rises with their rising education level, improving assessment of their own living standard and of the economic situation in the Czech Republic, rising satisfaction with their lives, rising willingness to take part in general elections and rising interest in politics,” the CVVM said.

In addition, supporters of the ANO movement and the CSSD tend to be satisfied with the political situations more than other parties’ fans.

The CVVM conducted the poll on 1,080 people on February 8-15.
