Prague, Dec 6 (CTK) – Czech President Milos Zeman has congratulated Alexander Van der Bellen on his election as Austrian president, Zeman’s spokesman Jiri Ovcacek told CTK yesterday.
Zeman only sent his congratulations to the candidate of the Greens two days after the election. In the past, he supported Van der Bellen’s counter-candidate, Norbert Hofer, from the rightist populist Freedom Party of Austria (FPOe).
Van der Bellen was supported by 2.47 million Austrians, or 53.79 percent of voters. Hofer was supported by 2.12 million people.
Zeman wrote to Van der Bellen that he congratulates him for a second time.
He wrote that the votes he received in the repeated second round of the presidential election in excess of the May election “prove the hopes that the Austrians pin on him.”
Zeman wrote that he was on friendly relations with Ven der Bellen’s predecessor Heinz Fischer for many years, “which was also reflected in the level of cooperation between our countries. I would like if the two of us succeeded in following up the previous successes and if we contributed to the development of relations between the Czech Republic and the Austrian Republic.”
Zeman only congratulated Van der Bellen two days after the election in the first presidential election as well. The election was later cancelled.
In mid-September, Zeman met Hofer at Prague Castle, by which he interfered in the election campaign in Austria, some politicians and commentators said.
Zeman and Hofer take similar opinions of migration.
In early July, Zeman said he was on the side of Hofer becasue he does not like Green parties.
Van der Bellen headed the Austrian Greens in the past.
