Ceska Trebova, East Bohemia, Jan 20 (CTK) – Petr Stepanek, Mayor of Prague 4, was elected new leader of Czech Greens on Saturday, replacing Matej Stropnicky who resigned after Greens’ failure in October election.

Stepanek won in the first round of the vote, having defeated two rivals.

He joined the party in 2003.

He said the Greens were guided by three pillars. One is environmental, one social and the third is freedom and democracy.

The Greens should turn their forces outwardly, not on myriads of voices that support it, Stepanek said.

The party should not watch public opinion polls, but see people to find out what problems they face, said Stepanek, a biologist and university lecturer by profession.

The Greens should have a shadow government and shadow spokespeople to comment on the topics approved by the government.

Stepanek said in his speech as the candidate that next time, regional conferences should nominate the party leader.

The Greens only received 1.4 percent of the vote in the October election to the Chamber of Deputies, which prompted Stropnicky’s resignation.
