The government introduced a new system of compensations for entrepreneurs and small companies which were affected by the COVID-19 pandemic and lost the source of income. According to the new law, the updated amount will reach 1000 Czech crowns per day. Previously, businesses received 500 Czech crowns daily. The Ministry of Finance already stated that the new system will be easier than the previous ones. Instead of having ten different programs of support, they decided to focus on one which won’t confuse entrepreneurs and will be more effective. “We decided to simplify everything and instead of ten programs make one where no company will fail, regardless of whether its establishment is closed or whether it is a subcontractor or not,”Continue Reading

The mystical, surreal and gruesome history of Prague is revealed in a new book. British author and journalist Paul Christian’s ‘Dark Secrets of Central Europe: A Tale of Three Cities’ starts with some of the sinister and blood-spattered history of Prague, before moving on to Vienna and Budapest.  The book represents a journey Paul took alongside two companions in 2019 when, as well as travelling across the continent, they travelled back in time to the dark and terrifying history of the titular three cities.  In Prague, Paul went in search of the mythical Golem allegedly summoned into being by Rabbi Loew. He also delved into the tragic and murderous story of the lovelorn Iron Knight and the city’s repeated incidentsContinue Reading

Radovan Hořín, the owner of the U Ervina restaurant in Olomouc who decided to open up his business last weekend, has since been fined CZK 9,000 by the police for breaking the anti-COVID-19 regulations.  According to city authorities in Olomouc, Hořín is endangering people by being open, and is also misleading them in saying that he isn’t breaking any laws; When he first opened a week ago, he said he had consulted with a lawyer who asserted there was in fact, no law requiring restaurants to close.  The city said it could end up fining Hořín CZK 20,000, but for now didn’t feel like being “draconian.”  “Although the accused’s actions were repeated and with a considerable amount of arrogance toward’sContinue Reading

“Some people use complexity to create doubt, then offer a simple, self-serving solution.”  Anonymous At no time in our history could this quote have more importance than today.  Many years ago, as a young professional, searching for so many answers to life’s questions, I met someone who was a very persuasive speaker—someone who had a powerful impact on the thoughts and actions of others.  We became friends and, as I got to know him better, I asked him how he could be so effective at influencing others.  “Create doubt,” he told me.  “If I can create doubt about something you believe to be true, that opens the door to changing your mind, and your belief. “ Over the years, I watchedContinue Reading

With 2020 now behind us, we’re facing the conclusion of two strange, whirlwind eras. One started almost exactly four years ago across the ocean with a president freshly out court for trafficking in fake college degrees and casino debt. The other is not even a year old and tells the tale, more sober, but equally weird, of a pandemic ravaging the globe, transforming governments into lemmings, each imitating the other in Sisyphean, yo-yo lockdowns, opening and closing society. Typically, at the end of the calendar year society takes stock by looking back. Here, I propose first looking forward to a point from which we can look back to gain more perspective on this most unprecedented past year. History is leastContinue Reading
