Brussels, July 20 (CTK) – The agreement about the limiting of Iran’s nuclear programme is a big opportunity for the EU to improve relations with Tehran, but only time will show whether the agreement will be respected, Czech Foreign Minister Lubomir Zaoralek said after a meeting with his EU counterparts yesterday.
The foreign ministers of the EU member countries yesterday welcomed the agreement that was signed last week.
Under the deal, sanctions imposed by the United States, the EU and the United Nations on Iran nine years ago will be lifted in exchange for long-term limiting of the nuclear programme.
The main negotiations were held between the USA and Iran, but Britain, China, France, Germany and Russia took part in them as well.
Zaoralek said the next six months would show whether Iran was really determined to meet all the terms of the deal.
It is too early to rejoice and one should be cautious, he said.
If Tehran violates the new agreement, the sanctions may be reintroduced.
Zaoralek said the agreement may influence the security climate in the region by showing whether cooperation is possible with Iran, which is a key player in the region, and by helping calm down the situation.
“It is a complex issue. Iran has been extensively involved in a great number of other countries,” he said.
Zaoralek said the European foreign ministers discussed the need to work out a long-term strategy of relations with Iran.
