Ralsko, North Bohemia, May 19 (CTK) – An area of almost 300 square kilometres near Ralsko, with interesting nature and history, will become the Czech Republic’s seventh national geopark, Nela Srstkova, from the Geopark Ralsko NGO, has told CTK.
The relevant certificate will be presented to the organisation on May 26, she said.
Ralsko was partly a strategic military area with an airfield in the past, where a part of the occupying Soviet troops were based from 1968 to 1989.
It has a lot of natural sights to offer, including monumental rocks, ponds and peatlands with valuable flora and fauna.
The organisers want to change the somewhat forgotten place into an attractive natural recreation area, with a network of tourist and cycling paths and services for the visitors.
The Ralsko organisation was established in 2013. Up to now, it has built infrastructure worth 5.5 million crowns in the area.
There are new nature trails with information panels and places for people to relax.
The NGO has been organising educational trips for schoolchildren, cooperating with foreign experts and plans to launch an annual festival focusing on the area’s development.
