Billionaire Elon Musk has indicated his intention to implement a user fee for access to the social network X, formerly known as Twitter. He asserted that this move is necessary to combat the presence of bots and fake accounts on the platform. According to the BBC, Musk made this statement during an interview with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu. It remains uncertain, however, whether this remark was a passing comment or a signal that such a plan is in development.

“We are transitioning to a model where users pay a modest monthly fee to utilize the platform,” Musk disclosed. He oversees companies such as Tesla and SpaceX.

Musk has been encouraging users to subscribe to the expanded service, now referred to as X Premium, since assuming control of Twitter last year. Subscribing users gain access to additional features, including the ability to compose longer posts and enhanced visibility on the platform. However, basic features remain free for all users.

The financial motivation behind implementing user fees is evident, as per the BBC. Musk also cited the presence of bots as a reason for charging for the service.

In the United States, X Premium currently carries a monthly cost of eight dollars (£183). The pricing varies depending on the subscriber’s country of residence.

In the Czech Republic, X Premium is priced at CZK 216.59 on the web, with a monthly cost of 249 CZK on the iOS app. Annual subscriptions are available for CZK 2,262.70 on the web and CZK 2,550 on iOS, according to the company’s website.

Musk also expressed a desire to offer more affordable options to users. “We’re working on a lower price point. We want it to be a nominal amount,” Musk stated. He added, “It’s a topic for further discussion, but in my view, it’s the most effective way to combat large-scale bot armies.”

Critics have raised concerns that the introduction of a paid gateway could potentially lead to a significant loss of users for X. This could impact the company’s advertising revenue, which currently constitutes a substantial portion of its income.

Musk identifies himself as a proponent of unrestricted freedom of speech, though some critics view his approach as irresponsible. Research suggests that the prevalence of hate comments on Network X has increased since Musk assumed control, and certain governments have criticized the platform for inadequate content regulation.

Elon Musk currently holds the title of the world’s wealthiest individual. According to Bloomberg’s billionaire index, his current fortune is valued at $243 billion (approximately CZK 5.6 trillion).
