Pyeongchang, Feb 6 (CTK) – Snowboarder Eva Samkova will carry the Czech flag at the opening ceremony of the Winter Olympics in South Korea on Friday, the Czech Olympic Committee announced on Tuesday.
Samkova, 24, is the snowboardcross champion from the 2014 Sochi Olympics.
Czech Olympic athletes voted who should be the flag bearer and three fourths of them chose her.
Four years ago in Sochi, Alpine skier Sarka Strachova carried the flag. At the opening ceremony in Vancouver eight years ago, it was ice hockey player Jaromir Jagr. At the 2006 Turin Winter Olympics, speed skater Martina Sablikova was the flag bearer.
Sablikova will take part in the forthcoming Olympics. She has won three gold, one silver and one bronze medals at speedskating Olympic events so far.
As she will compete in Korea already this weekend, Sablikova was not among those who could bear the flag on Friday, and Czech biathletes were not among them for the same reason. Snowboarder and Alpine skier Ester Ledecka will not take part in the opening ceremony either to avoid freezing weather.
