Prague, Oct 19 (CTK) – The Senate approved the accession of Montenegro to NATO on Wednesday, but the other house of Czech parliament, the Chamber of Deputies, has not yet taken a vote on the document, which it started discussing in September.

The ratification of the accession protocol was supported by 39 out of the 49 senators present.

The Czech Republic has been supporting the NATO membership of Montenegro for a long time.

Czech Foreign Minister Lubomir Zaoralek said Montenegro has definitely been the most successful in the integration processes among the countries of the West Balkans.

Montenegro’s entry into NATO would have positive influence on the stabilisation of the West Balkans, which all parties in Czech parliament support, Zaoralek said.

He said Montenegro chose the Czech Republic as its strategic partner in energy policy.

Zaoralek said 10 of the 28 NATO members, mostly East European countries, have ratified the Protocol on the Accession of Montenegro to NATO.
