The Prague Lítačka card: what it is, who needs one and how to use it
A season ticket only works once it is tied to a person. The PID card and app behind Prague's passes, concessions and children's free travel.

Most newcomers meet the word Lítačka in one of two ways. A colleague says "get a Lítačka" as if it were a verb, or an inspector asks a teenager for one. Both mean the same thing: the personal PID card, and the app that does the same job on a phone.
The useful question is whether you need it at all. For many people the answer is no. This guide sorts out who does, what the card and app are for, and where to find the rules that change, which is most of them. For the ticket types and zone logic, start with our guide to buying and validating tickets.
What the Lítačka is
PID is the integrated system that covers Prague and the surrounding region under one tariff. A single ticket works for anyone. A long-term pass is different: it is issued to a named person. The Lítačka is how that pass is carried, on a card or in the app.
Two things follow from that. A pass on a card or in the app does not need validating on each trip. And the same named record is where a concession can be stored, so an inspector can check an entitlement to a reduced fare. Which categories qualify, what proof each needs and what a pass costs are set by PID and change, so treat pid.cz as the only authority on them (as of 2026).
Who needs one
A visitor on a three-day trip is better off with a short ticket from the app or a machine. A resident who rides now and then can do the same. The card or app pass is for people with a regular pattern, such as a daily commuter, someone entitled to a discounted fare, or a parent whose child must show proof of age.
The card has one practical advantage over the app: it works when the phone does not. The app's advantage is that nobody has to queue for anything. Plenty of residents carry the pass in the app and think no more about it.
How people get one
PID decides where cards are issued and what you must bring, and the routes move online over time. Check pid.cz before you go anywhere.
If a card is lost, tell PID promptly and ask what it requires for a replacement. Passes are personal, and lending one to a friend can cost you the pass and a fine.
Children and proof of age
For parents the main point is children's fares. Under 6 needs nothing. Between 6 and 10 in Prague, no proof is needed either. From 10 to 15 the child should be able to show proof of age, and a Lítačka is one way to do that; an ID is another. Outer zones differ, and so does the fine print, so check pid.cz before you rely on this for a trip outside the city. Some families get a card for an older child mainly for convenience. Our guide to bringing children to Czechia covers the wider practicalities.
Does a pass pay off?
The sum is simple and the inputs are on pid.cz. Divide the price of the pass by the price of a single ticket and you have the number of rides at which the pass breaks even. This is hypothetical: if a pass cost CZK 600 and a single ticket CZK 40, break-even would be 15 rides. Count your real weekly trips against that figure with today's prices, not these.
Transport is one line in a bigger budget. The cost of living in Prague for expats and the family version put it next to rent and food.
Zones and the wider system
If you travel in from outside the city, zones matter more than the card does. Our explainer on PID and the regional system shows how coverage is defined, the system guide covers the modes it connects, and night transport covers getting home late. What a given pass includes is on pid.cz.
Frequently asked questions
Can a foreigner get a Lítačka?
Yes, the card is a transport card, not a citizenship document. Some concessions have their own conditions, so check pid.cz.
Do children need the card?
Under 6 ride free without proof. For ages 10 to 15 bring proof of age, such as an ID or a Lítačka (as of 2026; check pid.cz).
Is the app the same as the card?
Both carry a personal pass. The app needs a charged phone; the card does not.
Do I validate a pass?
A long-term pass on a card or in the app is not validated on each trip. Carry it and show it if an inspector asks.
