The Prague Biennale, the Czech Republic’s largest international exhibition of contemporary art, has for the third time opened its old screechy gates at the event’s traditional industrial site. The former factory hall in Karlín, with its crumbling walls, massive steel girders and cement floor, has become home to more than 200 artists from 28 countries. A novelty of this edition of the biennale is a photography exhibition, divided into four distinct sections. The vast majority of the remaining 20 sections, prepared by independent curators, is devoted to painting. The first impression is that the main asset of this year’s biennale is its raw space. The entrance room features an attractive selection of photographs, yet you don’t feel like sinking yourContinue Reading

Petr Nikl and 20 other artists ‘wash’ light in sewage plant

In the Secession catacombs of the former sewage plant in Prague-Bubeneč a glittery kayak protrudes from a round peephole. From time to time, when the golden level overflows, the calm water surface is disturbed by the stream of water. A whirl of light created by the twisting of the screw of the floodgate is projected onto the brick wall. This exhibition’s theme is the light but the main role is in fact played out by the historical space. That is what almost 20 artists brought together by Petr Nikl in the Labyrinth of Light exhibition wanted. The exhibition that started on Tuesday is full of “touchable” objects that were created directly for the industrial space. It will be open untilContinue Reading

Entropa, the controversial installation by Czech artist David Černý, was to be on display at the EU Council headquarters in Brussels until June when the Czech EU presidency will end. But it will disappear as early as 10 May. However, it’s not a victory of the critics of the giant artwork showing the stereotypes of individual member states. It’s the author’s wish. “It is a signal for Europe that not all people in the Czech Republic agree with the way the Czech government was removed,” Černý said in an interview with Hospodářské noviny. Why is Entropa going to be withdrawn from Brussels earlier than planned?Because I totally disagree with the way the government was removed, it’s a big shame. TheContinue Reading

Šedá will present ‘crazy’ art at Tate Modern

Kateřina Šedá is a nonconformist artist. She never particularly wanted to have her own exhibition; she just wants to create her “crazy” social projects. In spite of that, she is preparing to present her works at one of the most prestigious venues for international art, the Tate Modern in London. Catherine Wood, the curator at the Tate Modern, has sought out Šedá after seeing her work at various Czech presentation of Czech art abroad, and she offered to work with her. “She visited me sometime in February. Next month I will go to London to see what sort of space I could have,” says Šedá. “I really liked her work at the exhibitions Document and Manifest,” says Wood, confirming thatContinue Reading
