Prague, June 18 (CTK) – A fossilised tree, 17-20 million years old, has been found in the Vrsany sandstone quarry in northwest Bohemia, its trunk having 130 centimeters in diameter, daily Pravo writes Thursday.

It is most likely Taxodium, a deciduous conifer dating from the Miocene, said Petr Sulcek, geologist of the mining firm.

Five metres of the trunk have been revealed so far.

“It is still hard to say how big is the part hidden under the ground,” Sulcek told the paper.

The first considerable finding of a tree fossil in the area occurred in 1998. Another fossilised trunk was found in the 2000s.

The new finding will probably be moved to the regional centre of Usti nad Labem and be exhibited in the town’s museum and zoo.

In 2014, a 500-metre broad historical riverbed, through which water flowed to the Most basin about 20 million years ago, was revealed, Pravo writes.
