Prague, Nov 26 (CTK) – Czech singer Karel Gott, 77, who has overcome cancer this year, is the overall winner of the 51st Czech Nightingale competition and he also won men’s category for the 41st time on Saturday.
The award was taken over for him his daughter Charlotte.
The Czech Nightingale prizes are won by singers and bands who get the highest number of votes from the public.
Gott was also awarded as the interpreter of the most favourite song of Radio Impuls audiences.
The Czech song was one of the first which Gott recorded after his oncological treatment for the Non-Hodgkin lymphoma.
Gott was the best male singer for the first time in 1963.
He also has a number of fans abroad, particularly in Germany.
Former Czech president Vaclav Klaus decorated Gott with a state award for contribution to Czech culture in 2009.
Lucie Bila was named the best female singer for the 19th time. The Kabat band was the most popular music band for the 11th time.
The second most popular group was Ortel that came second last year as well. Some criticise it for xenophobic texts aimed against minorities.
