Praguer, Nov 28 (CTK) – Czech pop singer Karel Gott, 76, won the Czech Nightingale pop music contest again this year, for the 40th time in his career, and he participated in the awarding ceremony only shortly Saturday night as he is being treated for a lymph node malignant tumorous disease.
Gott´s treatment for the Non-Hodgkin lymphoma started at the end of October. Gott thanked the people for all the support he received from them during his treatment.
The annual contest took place for the 50th time on Saturday.
Gott was the best male singer for the first time in 1963.
Lucie Bila was named the best female singer, this being her 18th victory in the contest, and the rock group Kabat was the most popular music band, for the 10th time.
The Czech Nightingale prizes are won by singers and bands who get the highest number of votes from the public.
The second most popular group was Ortel that had been criticised for songs protesting against Islam and minorities.
This year, over 140,000 people took part in the voting.
