Prague, November, 2012: After a year of preparation, the first-ever running of the LawTech Europe Congress, organized by E-Discovery Europe s.r.o. (“E-Discovery”), came to a successful conclusion this last Monday, 12th November.
The LawTech Europe Congress was the largest congress on electronic evidence, computer forensics and legal technology to be held in Central and Eastern Europe. With more than 600 delegates attending, from as far afield as the USA, Israel and elsewhere in Europe, as well, of course, as the Czech Republic, the organisers deemed the whole event a huge success.
The Congress programme covered a wide range of topics, such as the influence of electronically saved information on the level of bribery and corruption, on-line dispute resolution (“ODR”), the hottest news in the fields of Cloud computing, electronic evidence, legal issues and new methods of forensic investigation, and digital evidence.
The opening speech was made by the world famous expert on the future of the legal service, Richard Susskind, who was expectedly very controversial, introducing his futuristic vision for legal services, appealing for changes to the present system and its lack of efficiency, and discussing the processes and procedures of the past. Richard is a big supporter of ODR, as he feels that it has huge advantages, including better financial and personal accessibility and efficiency, and he gave Ebay as an example of an existing satisfied user of ODR. He also suggested the diversification of legal services amongst specialized practitioners and presented his vision of legal services being provided by robots within the next 40-50 years.
Commenting on the event, Frederick Gyebi-Ababio, Managing Director of E-Discovery, said:
“The Congress gave everyone attending a fantastic opportunity to hear about the many innovative ideas that are coming out of this field, but that haven’t really been publicized within the European region. The whole day was filled with interesting speeches and discussions accompanied by presentations of new technological services, and everyone attending realized that this is an opportunity to really find out about the future of electronic evidence, computer forensics and technology for lawyers. The bar has now been set very high and it will be difficult to raise it next year, but we will surely do our best.”
The whole congress was finalised by closing speeches given by Josef Donat of ROWAN LEGAL, and Frederick Gyebi-Ababio. Guests at the gala dinner that followed the conference had the chance to hear one more speech – Karel Janeček’s optimistic vision of the future of bribery suppression in the Czech Republic. The evening then served as an opportunity to network and discuss ideas and opinions on this complex and important subject.
