Prague, Feb 4 (CTK) – The Prague zoo hails the birth of a young giant anteater, the first in its history, its representatives have told CTK, adding that the zoo’s previous long-lasting attempts to breed the rare South American mammal were a failure.
The zoo acquired its first giant anteaters in the 1950s and it has kept the species since, with some pauses.
However, it is only its current anteater pair, Ella and Hannibal, which has given birth to offspring.
The young, born on January 20, closely clings to its mother, who cares for it assiduously. It weighs 1990 grammes now and it fares well.
Ella and Hannibal are both three years old. They came to Prague from the Warsaw and the Madrid zoos, respectively, two years ago.
The giant anteater figures on the list of endangered wild species completed by the International Union for the Conservation of Nature (IUCN).
