While Rio celebrates Carnival, and New Orleans hosts Mardi Gras, the town of Roztoky u Prahy enjoys a festival with a distinctly Czech flavor: Masopust.
Since 1999, visitors have descended on the town just north of Prague to take part in a modern interpretation of the traditional feast days before the fasting period of Lent. Musicians, actors and puppeteers lead a costumed parade from Roztoky to nearby Únětice, meeting a second parade coming from the opposite direction. With most paraders dressed in fanciful homemade costumes, there are no spectators — only revelers.
Visit our photo gallery for more photos from the parade. Their author is Margot Buff, a video producer and photographer who has lived in Prague since the turn of the millennium.
