Prague, April 18 (CTK) – The Prague zoo is the first in Europe to have succeeded in breeding Javan green magpies which are among the most endangered birds in the world, the garden’s spokeswoman Jana Mysliveckova told CTK on Monday, adding that an estimated 100 to 250 of the birds live in the wild.
Twenty-nine specimens of the distinctly coloured birds have been bred within an international programme on Java and 12 of them were taken to Europe. One couple went to the Prague zoo.
Antonin Vaidl, the zoo’s birds curator, wrote to CTK that the behaviour of the parents and certain sounds that could be heard from the aviary in mid-March were indicative of that the basket beneath the ceiling could contain young.
He said the birds are very sensitive and that is why the nest cannot be checked during the nesting.
Now, the two young are already relatively large. The parents are green, while the offspring are blue, Vaidl wrote.
