Prague, April 17 (CTK) – A narrow majority of Turks have freely voted in favour of a dictatorship as the president will gain a control over the government, parliament and judiciary thanks to the referendum, Czech political scientist Radko Hokovsky, from the think-tank European Values, said on Monday.

The EU should end its accession talks with Turkey and the collaboration with it should be based on a different form, Hokovsky said.

“Right on Tuesday, the European Commission should recommend to its members that they stop the negotiations and the ministers should freeze the open chapters on the nearest occasion and start diplomatic talks on a different form of cooperation between the EU and Turkey,” he added.

“The prime ministers should entirely finish the accession process with Turkey at the subsequent European Council meeting,” Hokovsky said.

In reaction to the Sunday Turkish referendum, he pointed out that a larger proportion of Turks living in various countries of Europe voted for the constitutional change than in Turkey itself, he added.

“This has revealed a low extent of integration into the liberal democratic value system among Turkish immigrants in Germany, Austria, the Netherlands and Belgium,” Hokovsky said.

The proposal to change the constitution in order to largely increase the powers of Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan was passed by a narrow majority of 51.4 percent.

The Turkish opposition says the vote was rigged and demands its cancellation.

Hokovsky said he expected the narrow minority of the Turks who had voted against the change to try and reverse the result, but they would not succeed.

Given President Recep Tayyip Erdogan’s determination it is quite unlikely that the rapid transformation of the country into a de iure dictatorship will fail, Hokovsky said.
