Prague, July 29 (CTK) – Czech politicians should submit their property statements on assuming their posts to one register to be managed by the Justice Ministry under a draft amendment the government approved on Wednesday, Legislation Minister Jiri Dienstbier (Social Democrats, CSSD) has written on Twitter.
The amendment that should take effect in January 2017 will now go to parliament.
According to the draft amendment, the ministry would set up a new department with 20 employees. It would also control and supervise the agenda.
The costs of the department and the operation of the register have been put at approximately 12 million crowns annually.
NGOs wanted the control to be carried out by an independent office like in Poland.
Any breach of the law would be fined with up to half-a-million crowns. It would be applicable among others to those who, after leaving their public post, would start working for a firm which they helped gain a big contract while publicly active.
The draft amendment requires politicians to also report the incomes of their wives or husbands and registered partners.
