Plzen, West Bohemia, April 30 (CTK) – Viktoria Plzen is the champion of the top Czech football league again because the second Sparta Praha cannot overcome it three rounds before the end of the season anymore after Plzen defeated Banik Ostrava 2-0 on Saturday.
Ostrava, on the contrary, will be relegated to the lower league – for the first time in 50 years. Banik is one of the most traditional Czech football teams and it was relegated only in 1949 and 1966. Only Slavia Praha has been a permanent part of the league longer, for 51 years.
Plzen has won the league for the fourth time in the last six seasons, but this is the first time that it defended its victory.
Plzen took the crucial step to become champion already last week when it beat Sparta 3-0 in Prague.
Liberec beat Brno 4-2 on Saturday and it is certain to play the European leagues the next season.
Mlada Boleslav cannot take its participation in the European league for granted yet because its match in Jihlava ended with a draw. However, Slavia is unlikely to close the 11-point gap in its last four games.
