Prague, Aug 20 (CTK) – The Sportovni holding Praha group sold the Sparta Praha ice hockey club to Petr Briza, Sparta’ board chairman and former goalkeeper, the club has written on its website.

Briza said the owners of Sparta told him about one year ago that they want to gradually withdraw from public life and sell the club. He said he finally decided to become the new owner of the club.

He said he won financial support from private entities.

Briza said he would provide more information at a press conference held before the opening of the new season of the top Czech ice hockey league on Thursday, September 1.

The key figure behind Sportovni holding Praha, which owned the club from 2012, is billionaire Petr Speychal and Russian businessman Yevgeniy Mishkovsky. Speychal’s company CKD Praha DIZ is facing insolvency proceedings and it is investigated over suspected tax fraud.

In the past, Sportovni holding Praha also owned the Lev Praha club which played the Kontinental Hockey League, and the Nymburk basketball club.
