Prague, June 15 (CTK) – Seven Czech experts left for Georgia yesterday to help the zoo in Tbilisi hit by disastrous floods, Jana Ondrejchova, from the Prague Zoo, told CTK Monday.
The Prague zoo sent a five-member team headed by Petr Velensky that was joined by two breeders from the zoos in Usti nad Labem, north Bohemia, and Zlin, south Moravia.
“On the basis of our experience with floods, we have decided to form a team of breeders who will leave for the Georgian zoo to help secure the care for animals,” Prague Zoo director Miroslav Bobek said.
The zoon in Prague-Troja was inundated during the floods in August 2002 and in June 2013.
Bobek as the head of the Union of Czech and Slovak Zoological Garden also started organising a public fund-raising for the Tbilisi zoo.
The Prague zoo realises the risk of floods and this is why it is trying to protect the lower part of its complex, situated near the Vltava (Moldau) River, as much as possible.
A number of wild animals died in the floods and others when they fled from the zoo in Tbilisi at the weekend. Some animals are still reported missing, its spokeswoman has said.
Three zoo employees drowned in high water.
Tbilisi was hit by strong floods in the night from Saturday to Sunday. Several dozen houses and cars were destroyed in the city.
