Prague/Paris, Aug 25 (CTK) – Karel Schwarzenberg, former Czech foreign minister and TOP 09 chairman, has joined a chain hunger strike marking the victims of communist regimes in Paris, the BEZ komunistu.cz. platform announced Tuesday.
Along with Schwarzenberg, former Soviet dissident Viktor Faynberg, one of the protesters against the 1968 occupation of Czechoslovakia in Moscow 47 years ago, joined the symbolic event in Paris Tuesday.
Schwarzenberg said the chain hunger strike was meaningful among others “to make us realise that the current Russian rulers, though they condemned the nonsensical economic policy of the Communists, are restoring their imperialist policy.”
Fainberg was among the “Magnificent Eight” who protested against the Soviet-led invasion of Czechoslovakia at Moscow’s Red Square in August 1968, along with dissidents Natalya Gorbanevskaya Pavel Litvinov, Konstantin Babicki, Tatiana Bayeva, Larisa Bogorazova, Vadim Delone and Vladimir Dremlyuga.
They were persecuted by the Soviet regime for their courageous act.
Apart from Fainberg, only Litvinov and Bayeva are still alive.
The BEZ komunistu.cz (Without Communists) group has long reminded of the Soviet occupation and the crimes of Communism.
More than 1100 people, including famous public personalities, have participated it the chain hunger strike in the Czech Republic to commemorate victims of the communist regime.
