Prague, Dec 1 (CTK) – Czech President Milos Zeman supports the decision of the German government to join military operations against Islamic State and it is only good if countries fight it, Zeman’s spokesman Jiri Ovcacek said Tuesday.

Germany wants to deploy 1,200 soldiers in the fighting in Syria and Iraq.

Earlier on Tuesday, the German government approved a military operation against the militant Islamist movement. The final consent is yet to be given by parliament, but it is expected to do so.

Germany is to deploy 1,200 soldiers, the Tornado reconnaissance jets, refuelling aircraft and a naval frigate. The mandate of the mission has been limited to 12 months.

“It is only good that countries are joining the fight with so-called Islamic State, which means that such a step is backed by Zeman,” Ovcacek said.

He pointed out Zeman’s speech at the United Nations General Assembly where he called for a joint international action against IS.

France and Russia, targeted by terrorist attacks orchestrated by Islamist militants, have stepped up military efforts against IS in past weeks.
