Prague, Dec 29 (CTK) – The big firework with which Prague annually hails New Year on January 1 will be held on the Vitkov Hill for the first time, instead of the Letna plain, its most frequent venue in previous years.
The fireworks will start at 18:00. It is to last about ten minutes.
The access to the Vitkov Hill will be closed to the public on New Year´s Day, Prague police spokeswoman Iveta Martinkova told CTK on Tuesday.
Tens of thousands of people celebrate New Year in the centre of Prague every year.
Apart from watching the firework from various places in Prague, they can attend a number of other New Year´s Day events linked to it, such as steamboat cruises on the Vltava River or light shows in selected hotels and restaurants.
Smaller fireworks, including at midnight to January 1, will be held by some district town halls.
On New Year´s Eve, Praguers and visitors to the city can attend a number of concerts, theatre performances and parties in restaurants often including a symbolic toast.
Streets in the centre of Prague will be closed to cars from December 31, 16:00 to January 1, 10:00. The tram lines will remain in operation, Martinkova said.
She said the municipal police patrols will be reinforced to ensure security and the safety of people, along with officers from the state police´s raid, foreigner, road and criminal units.
Fireworks will also be held in all regional centres and many other towns across the Czech Republic.
