Yangon, Feb 28 (CTK) – Czech Foreign Minister Lubomir Zaoralek met former Burmese political prisoners during his visit to Burma on Sunday, he has written on Twitter, adding that the debate also touched on Czech experience with removing the wrongs inflicted by the past regime.
On Monday, Zaoralek (Social Democrats, CSSD) is to meet Aung San Suu Kyi, the best-known Burmese former political prisoner and opposition leader.
He is also scheduled to meet President Thein Sein.
“They asked me to enable the newly elected [Burmese] lawmakers and former political prisoners to visit Czech parliament to get acquainted with our way of removing the wrongs inflicted by the previous regime,” Zaoralek said after meeting members of 88 Generation, a political prisoners’ association.
Still as a part of a two-nation country, Czechoslovakia, the Czech Republic had a communist regime from 1948 to 1989.
Former opponents to the Burmese regime succeeded in entering parliament in the November 2015 election. The party led by Aung San Suu Kyi, a Nobel Peace Prize holder, commands a majority of votes in the parliament. However, a certain portion of power still rests with the military, which has one fourth of parliamentary seats guaranteed by the constitution.
The lineup of the new Burmese government is to be known in April.
On Monday, Zaoralek plans to discuss the country’s further political development with Aung San Suu Kyi.
“To separate the police from the military, to bring the military under civilian control – these are the main goals for the victorious political party led by legendary Aung San Suu Kyi to pursue,” Zaoralek wrote on Twitter on Sunday.
Burma is the second destination of Zaoralek on his trip to southeast Asia. His first destination was Indonesia where he met the top state representatives earlier this week to discuss further enhancement of bilateral trade.
On his way to Asia, Zaoralek has been accompanied by about 30 Czech entrepreneurs.
