Prague, March 22 (CTK) – The Czech soldiers protecting the Bamako command of the EU training mission in Mali (EUTM) stopped an attack by a man with an assault rifle on Monday, Czech Chief-of-Staff Josef Becvar said in a press release sent to CTK on Tuesday.
In cooperation with Malian soldiers, they liquidated the attacker. None of the soldiers was injured, Becvar said.
He praised the courage and resolute action of the Czech troops. The attacker did not succeed in entering the premises of the command, Hotel Nord Sud, he added.
The shooting incident is being investigated. No other attack against the EUTM command followed.
Malian Interior Ministry said several assailants attacked the mission’s headquarters and one of them was killed.
General Staff spokesman Jan Sulc said the Czech troops deployed in Mali are operating in the standard regime again, meeting their patrolling tasks.
The Czech military sent about 40 soldiers to the EUTM, most of whom protect the command in Bamako. Several Czech instructors help train the Malian armed forces to fight Islamists in the north of the country.
