Luxembourg, April 19 (CTK) – Libyan troops might undergo a part of their training in the Czech Republic in the future, similar to what the Iraqi security forces members are doing now, Czech Defence Minister Martin Stropnicky said after a two-day meeting of the EU countries’ foreign and defence ministers on Tuesday.
He commented on the ministers’ resolution saying the EU is ready to support the Libyan government of national unity in various spheres, including security.
The EU is clearly aware of that Europe must help the new government with the reconstruction of Libya after a long civil war, Stropnicky said.
If the EU remained passive, hundreds of thousands of migrants might be trying to get to Europe across the Mediterranean, he added.
The EU has recognised the national unity cabinet of PM Fayez Sarraj as the only legitimate government in Libya and is prepared to support its requirements in various areas, the EU High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy, Federica Mogherini, said.
NATO, too, will support the Libyan government, its Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg said, adding that the EU and NATO plans in this respect should be complementary.
Stropnicky said the reconstruction of Libya must be supported not only because of a threatening migrant crisis. The EU could, for instance, help protect the Libyan border, including that with Tunisia.
However, Mogherini pointed out that all similar proposals can be implemented only if Sarraj’s government asked for help.
