Prague, May 16 (CTK) – Painter, stage designer and university teacher Jaroslav Malina, who produced over 400 stage designs, has suddenly died at the age of 79 in Ceske Budejovice, south Bohemia, his family told CTK on Monday.
Malina worked for drama, opera, the puppet theatre, film and television.
Malina was born on December 5, 1937. He studied at the Teaching Faculty of Charles University and at the Theatre Faculty of the Academy of Performing Arts in Prague (DAMU) between 1961 and 1964.
He was rector of the Academy of Performing Arts in Prague in 1996-1998.
Malina was lecturing at the universities in the USA, Japan, Finland and Britain. In the latter country, he received the honorary doctorate at Nottingham Trent University in 2002.
In 1984, he gained the Golden Medal at the 7th international stage design show in Novi Sad. In 1991, 1999 and 2003, he was general commissioner of the Prague Quadriennal.
