Prague, Aug 23 (CTK) – Hillary Clinton as U.S. president would probably be a higher guarantee of security than Donald Trump, Czech Prime Minister Bohuslav Sobotka told Tuesday’s issue of daily Hospodarske noviny (HN).
“Considering the pre-election statements made by Donald Trump and Hillary Clinton, from the point of view of guarantees for the allies I see more security in the election of Clinton,” Sobotka told the paper.
Sobotka said it is up to the American citizens to make the choice, but Democratic candidate Clinton seems to be “a higher guarantee of maintaining the trans-Atlantic cooperation.”
He said the Czech Republic must keep its good relations with the United States irrespective of the election result.
The U.S. presidential election is scheduled for November.
The Republican candidate Trump terrified many European politicians including Sobotka by his statement that the USA might not react in any way if Russians attacked Eastern Europe, HN writes.
The paper writes that Sobotka usually talks in a reserved, diplomatic manner.
After his return from a three-week holiday, Sobotka presented the priorities of Czech foreign policy at the annual meeting of Czech ambassadors in Prague on Monday. He said there is no good alternative to the membership of the European Union.
Sobotka made it clear that his government wants the country to belong to the West and does not want it to move eastwards, the paper writes, adding that the international ambition of Russian President Vladimir Putin are growing.
HN says this goes against the line followed by President Milos Zeman and his assistants. Zeman will be one of the main speakers at an annual forum organised by Putin’s supporter Vladimir Yakunin in the Greek island of Rhodes in the autumn.
