Prague, Aug 27 (CTK) – Last year, 4,877 foreigners were convicted of a crime in the Czech Republic, which was 100 more than two years ago, according to an Interior Ministry report on the situation in migration released on Saturday.
The proportion of foreigners in the total number of convicted persons was 7.4 percent.
Slovaks, followed by Ukrainians and Vietnamese, were the most frequently punished foreigners.
In the past decade, the number of convicted foreigners was over 4,000 each year, but in 2008 and 2009 it was over 5,000.
Most (5498) foreigners were convicted by Czech courts in 2008, the least number (4003) two years earlier.
There were 1,845 convicted Slovaks, which was 67 less than two years ago.
On the other hand, the number of convicted Ukrainians rose by 72 to 731.
The courts found guilty of a crime 512 Vietnamese. In addition, there were 285 convicted Romanians and 243 Poles.
Bulgarians, Germans, Russians, Moldovans and Austrians are also in the top ten of the convicted foreigners.
Most foreigners were found guilty in Prague (1480), followed by South Moravia (721) and Central Bohemia (594). The least number (289) was registered in South Bohemia.
A total of 76 foreigners were remanded in custody and 58 of them were eventually expelled from the Czech Republic.
Last year, the police started prosecuting 7264 foreigners, which was 121 fewer than in 2014.
Foreigners are most often prosecuted over driving under the influence of alcohol and drugs, theft and economic crime.
