September is here and so is the grape harvest season. One of many vinobraní celebrations to be held across the country to mark the new wine harvest starts at Prague Castle this weekend. Held at the Riding School Terrace Garden of the Castle, Vinobraní na Pražském hradě will include dulcimer music, wine tasting, fencing, kids activities and guided tours. You will get to taste freshly pressed grape juice squeezed in a replica of a historical grape press. Fermented grape juice known as burčák will also be served. The weekend event runs both days from 11am to 5pm and entry is free (except for the Saturday wine tasting).
If you’re looking to sweeten it up some more, check out the open air honey fair at Prague’s Botanical garden this weekend. Open on both days from 10am to 6pm, the venue will offer a large variety of honey-made products, including beeswax candles, ginger bread, tea, mead and cosmetics. You can try your hand at creating a beeswax candle or decorating ginger bread cakes.
One of Prague’s largest parks, Divoká Šárka, stages an outdoor performance of Dvořák’s opera Jakobín on Sunday, 6 September. Another good reason to spend a day outside. Follow the map to find the outdoor theatre, whose history dates back to 1913. The show, prepared by the Prague Original Music Theatre, will feature soloists and orchestras from the National Theatre and the State Opera. Bring a blanket to sit on and a raincoat just in case. Refreshments will be on sale, otherwise free. Starts at 2pm.
Up until the end of September, you can watch movies for free at a circus tent located near the Malostranská metro stop (entry from U Lužického semináře street). The Letní poloha outdoor cinema offers daily screenings of Czech and foreign films from 8:15pm. For this week’s premiers though you have to find a less original site. They include Los Abrazos Rotos, the latest film by Pedro Almodóvar, again starring Penélope Cruz, and Man on Wire, James Marsh’s documentary about the 1974 performance by a French artist who walked across a thin cable in between the two towers of the World Trade Centre and got arrested for the act. Prague’s Světozor and Kino Aero are showing the film. Enjoy.
