Rzeszow, Poland, Oct 15 (CTK) – The Visegrad Four (the Czech Republic, Poland, Hungary and Slovakia) has proven its worth in the EU dispute over refugee quotas, Czech President Zeman told journalists during the final press conference of the V4 summit on Saturday.
“I am glad that our attitude has proven its worth and that it is being accepted by other countries because the quotas are almost no longer spoken about or they are considered a dead issue,” Zeman said.
He said the V4 had been against the compulsory redistribution of asylum seekers within the EU.
Zeman said the V4 supported the idea of the EU that would be closer to the public and less bureaucratic.
“Brexit was caused to some extent by the poor functioning of the EU and a lack of strong leadership,” Zeman said.
Zeman also voiced reservations about the foreign politicians and EU countries which criticise the V4.
He mentioned as an example Luxembourg’s Foreign Minister Jean Asselborn who has repeatedly expressed objections to Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban’s government.
On Friday, Slovak President Andrej Kiska expressed a different view of the V4.
Kiska said since the V4 had a bad image abroad, he recommended that it should not be used as a shield for internal intentions.
Zeman said in connection with the refugee crisis, the V4 was wiser than the rest of the EU.
