Prague, Aug 31 (CTK) – The Czech Republic will send 40 million crowns as a gift to the Azrak refugee camp in northern Jordan, the cabinet decided on Wednesday, Prime Minister Bohuslav Sobotka (Social Democrats, CSSD) has written on Twitter.

The money is designated for the construction and reconstruction of the camp’s housing premises and infrastructure.

It will help build 456 housing units for almost 2,300 refugees, and repair 3,544 units inhabited by 17,720 people.

Besides, an access road to one part of the camp is to be built, according to a document discussed by the cabinet.

The Azrak camp has been in operation for two years. It is comprised of four independent parts with 10,000 housing units altogether.

The number of newcomers and thus also the camp’s inhabitants has been rising since last year.

“Almost 55,000 people stay in the camp now,” the document says.

Last year, Czech financial aid helped, among others, the Zaatari refugee camp in Jordan where a safe electric grid was built for 45 million crowns.

Earlier this year, the Prague government approved the Czech development projects abroad worth a total of 66 million crowns.

The Foreign Ministry, for its part, has earmarked 150 million crowns for foreign aid projects.
